Below are the requirements and steps to set up GeneXus for Agents using the GeneXus for Agents Setup.
GeneXus for Agents requires the following components to be available in the environment:
- .NET SDK 10
- .NET Runtime 8
- ASP.NET Core Runtime 8
- GeneXus 18
- Sufficient disk space
The setup checks these requirements before installation. If a required component is not available, the setup indicates whether it will be installed. Components already available are detected and do not need to be installed again.
Download the GeneXus for Agents Setup (win-x64) from the GeneXus Canary Channel and execute it.
Before installation, the setup checks the current environment and displays the status of:
- Requirements: Indicates whether the required components are available.
- GeneXus for Agents components: Indicates which components are already installed.
- Agentic CLIs: Detects the supported Agentic CLIs available in the environment and provides individual options to install the Nexa skill and GAM skill for each one.
- Environment configuration: Displays the environment variables used by GeneXus for Agents and whether they are already configured.
Based on this information, the setup determines what needs to be installed or configured.
The Install for all users checkbox allows GeneXus for Agents to be installed for all users of the system. Administrator approval is required when this option is selected.
The setup installs the following GeneXus for Agents components:
- MCP Server: Enables agents and external tools to perform operations on GeneXus Knowledge Bases.
- gx CLI: Acts as an intermediary between an Agentic CLI and the GeneXus MCP Server, handling communication with the server.
- Nexa skill: Provides the LLM with GeneXus-specific knowledge, examples, instructions, and best practices. The setup provides individual installation options for the supported Agentic CLIs detected in the environment.
- GAM skill: Provides the LLM with instructions and best practices for working with GeneXus Access Manager (GAM).
During installation, the setup creates or configures the environment variables required by GeneXus for Agents.
- GX_MCP_SERVER_EXE: Contains the full path to the GeneXus MCP Server executable. By default, it is used to start the MCP Server when creating a new Knowledge Base. For existing Knowledge Bases, GeneXus resolves the appropriate MCP Server using the information stored in the Knowledge Base and uses this variable only when that information is not available.
- GXV18_INSTALLATION_DIRECTORY: Contains the path to the GeneXus 18 installation detected by the setup. For existing Knowledge Bases, the GeneXus 18 installation used for operations that require GeneXus 18 resources is resolved from the InstallationPath stored in the Knowledge Base .gxw file. This environment variable is used as a fallback when the GeneXus 18 installation cannot be resolved from the Knowledge Base, for example, when creating a new Knowledge Base.
