Note: The evolution of GeneXus continues through GeneXus for Agents and GeneXus 18.

Below are the requirements and steps to install and configure Legacy - GeneXus for Agents using the Windows Native setup.

Required components

  1. An Agentic CLI, for example CODA CLI or Claude Code CLI
  2. gxnext CLI
  3. GeneXus Next, including GeneXus MCP Server.
  4. GeneXus skill: Nexa
Note: You can also work with Knowledge Bases created with GeneXus 18. However, the GeneXus MCP Server is not included with GeneXus 18.

This article describes how to use GeneXus for Agents with GeneXus Next, including when working with GeneXus 18 Knowledge Bases. If you want to use GeneXus for Agents with GeneXus 18 without installing GeneXus Next, use the GeneXus for Agents Setup. For requirements and installation steps, read GeneXus for Agents - Requirements and Setup.

1. Agentic CLI

Choose the Agentic CLI of your preference:

1.1. Claude Code CLI

Download and install it if you choose this option.

1.2. CODA CLI

Read the documentation for installation and configuration in the CODA site.

Note: Version 1.5 or later is required, as this version introduces support for skills.

2. gxnext CLI

gxnext CLI is a component of GeneXus for Agents that connects an agentic CLI (for example, CODA CLI, Claude Code CLI, Codex CLI, or others) with the GeneXus MCP Server. The agentic CLI interprets your natural language requests, while gxnext CLI manages the interaction with the MCP Server.

3. GeneXus Next installation

Install GeneXus Next, which includes the GeneXus MCP Server.

Note: After the installation of GeneXus the GXNEXT_MCP_SERVER_EXE environment variable is automatically created. This variable contains the full path to the GeneXus MCP Server executable. By default, it is used to start the MCP Server when creating a new Knowledge Base. For existing Knowledge Bases, GeneXus resolves the appropriate MCP Server using the information stored in the Knowledge Base and uses this variable only when this information is not available.

3.1. Start the GeneXus MCP Server

After installing GeneXus, you should start the GeneXus MCP Server once to verify that it starts correctly.

In all cases, you can monitor the execution using the generated log files (GXMBLServices.log in GeneXusNextInstallationFolder\bl\logs).

3.2. Configuration settings

When running GeneXus for the first time, a default settings.json file is created in the installation/bl directory. This file contains the default settings used by GeneXus, such as:

  • The location where Knowledge Bases (KBs) are created or searched.
  • SQL Server (or LocalDB) connection information.

To customize these settings without modifying the default settings.json, create a settings-overrides.json file in the same directory with the values you want to override.

Configuration values are resolved in the following order:

  1. settings-overrides.json
  2. Environment variables
  3. settings.json

Example settings-overrides.json:

{
  "KnowledgeBases": {
    "ProjectsFolder": "c:\\KBS",
    "SqlServerInstance": ".\\SQLEXPRESS"
  }
}
Note: The ProjectsFolder setting under KnowledgeBases defines the default location where new Knowledge Bases are created when no location is specified. When a location is specified, the Knowledge Base is created in a subdirectory named after the Knowledge Base. However, if the specified directory already has the same name as the Knowledge Base, no additional subdirectory is created.

4. GeneXus skill: Nexa

The GeneXus skill: Nexa is available from the GeneXus Download Center.

Download the ZIP package and extract its contents.

After extracting the content, locate the nexa folder and identify the required files:

  • nexa/references/
  • nexa/SKILL.md

These files define the skill and must be used when installing it in your coding CLI.

For installation steps (for example, Claude Code, CODA CLI, Codex, or OpenCode), refer to the README.md file included in the downloaded package.
